Poseidon challenged Athena for the city of Athens. They each gave the citizens a gift; from Athena, an olive tree and from Poseidon, a salt-water spring. To the citizens, a salt-water spring was not as useful as the olive tree. In a different version, the Olympians voted between Poseidon and Athena. All of the goddesses voted for Athena to be the patron, or special guardian, of Athens. All of the gods, except Zeus, voted for Poseidon to win Athens. Zeus did not vote because he could not choose between his brother and daughter. The vote turned in favor of Athena. Athena became the patron goddess of Athens. Athens soon became the center of learning in Greece
